One of the main Union strategies for winning the Civil War was a naval blockade the coastal regions and ports of the South. This strategy was named the Anaconda Plan and was meant to strangle the south by cutting off vital supplies.

It has been said that three of the major Civil War battles actually determined the outcome of the Civil War. These three battles were the 1st Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Gettysburg. These battles alone inflicted over 85,000 casualities to the Union and the Confederate armies.
